Water & Wastewater

waterFarming this land for the past 20 years has made the Liberty Groves partners aware of and sensitive to the existing conditions related to water and wastewater in the Madera Ranchos community. They feel it is their responsibility to be proactive in addressing these issues and have therefore initiated a number of efforts to ensure water and wastewater issues are being addressed on a regional level.

The following is a brief description of the water and wastewater resource and infrastructure related projects that the Liberty Groves partners are currently involved in.

Water Management Working Group

What is the Water Management Working Group?

Through contacts with the Israeli Department of Agriculture, the partners have sponsored and are continuing to sponsor and facilitate the creation of a working group of Israeli and Central Valley scientists. The purpose of the working group is to exchange information, ideas, and solutions to water issues that are common to both regions, such as recharge, salinity, reuse of treated effluent and more. The goal of this effort is to overcome some of the regional water problems, the community is facing by:

  • Utilizing the information ascertained from these workshops to the find the most fitting, cutting-edge, water management technologies
  • To share information with central valley water specialists that are directly involved with regional water planning, and
  • To incorporate these technologies into the Liberty Groves proposed water system.
Why Israeli scientists?

The land of Israel has also faced challenges with water resources. In order to survive, it became necessary for them to find ways to stretch and reuse every drop of water. Israeli water science is a world leader in its research and technology and we can learn a lot from their achievements and philosophy of dealing with water issues.

What is next?

In the past three years, the Liberty Groves group has been involved in sponsoring and facilitating meetings with these scientists and twice have brought this group from Israel to meet with scientists at California State University Fresno; Sacramento politicians including our area's State Assemblyman Mike Villines; Mr. Lester Snow, Director of the California Department of Water Resources; and other distinguished scientists in the Central Valley.

A third meeting was recently held to engage the community in a dialogue with this core group. To learn more, please click the following link:

Storage of County 215 Water

What is the County trying to do with 215 water?

The County has a number of programs and plans in various stages of development to address regional water issues. One program that they have brought to our attention is a need for storage areas to capture the County's allocation of excess 215 waters. Liberty Groves representatives have met with the Planning Director and the County Engineer to explore their needs and ways in which Liberty Groves can assist with this program. The partners have hired engineers to conduct on-site surveys and analysis to identify the necessary site and infrastructure improvements that would need to be made to provide these storage areas. If determined to be feasible, necessary improvements will be made to make these storage areas available to the County.
