What is SEMCU?

(SEMCU) is a non-profit entity organized by residents of Southeast Madera County to provide a forum and an organization to address issues of importance to the area. SEMCU was originally formed in 1999 as the "41 Corridor Alliance" to assist the area in constructively addressing traffic, water, sewer and other issues that are faced by the area. In 2010, the organization was renamed SEMCU and restructured through revised bylaws and a new, larger, more inclusive board of directors intended to represent the entire area. Today, SEMCU is a non-profit advocacy organization representing the interests of the area in both public and private arenas. Because advocacy organizations like SEMCU are limited by the tax code, the members of SEMCU formed the SEMCU Foundation in late 2010 (the Foundation). The Foundation's purpose is to seek tax deductable donations and obtain grants to fund needed projects in the area. The Foundation is a separate entity from SEMCU, but it intends to cooperate closely with SEMCU in addressing the needs of the area. Both organizations are in the process of applying for the applicable Federal and State non-profit approvals. The principals of Liberty Groves believe that SEMCU and the Foundation are very beneficial to the area. As such, they have committed both financial support and significant volunteer time to SEMCU and the Foundation to ensure that issues faced by area residents are addressed.
